Tioga Region

Highlights:

Entering Pennsylvania's Northern Tier, shaped by massive continental glaciers, Tioga Region continues the challenging backcountry hiking experience of MST through deeply wooded high plateau, and really rural low hills. The views continue and the terrain becomes ever more varied, offering pleasant natural and cultural discoveries around each bend and over every knob.

Tioga Region construction began in 2002 at Cowanesque Lake. It connects with Crystal Hills Trail, a branch of NY's Finger Lakes Trail, so the orange blazes continue across the NY border.Sections 17, 19, and 20 are fully open. Section 18 is nearly complete, however there is a temporary blazed roadwalk through Antrim, and also a temporary unblazed roadwalk on gravel roads over Maple Hill.

MST in Tioga Region links Tioga State Forest; State Game Lands No. 268 and No. 37; Hills Creek State Park; Tioga-Hammond Lakes; Cowanesque Lake, and over a dozen willing private landowners through Tioga County. This is an all volunteer effort sponsored by our private non-profit membership organization.

Tioga Region Updates

    See Section 18 updates

Part of MST Section 18, km 0.92 to 7.13 NB (5.69 KM), on private property in Duncan Twp, Tioga County, is closed indefinitely due to heavy construction activity. (This is the same section that had the Oct 1-Jan 15 hunting season closure.) As during hunting season hikers will need to detour along SR 3009 through downtown Antrim, turning at the stone church to continue to follow SR 3009. We appreciate your understanding during this time and it is not known when the trail will be able to be reopened. (07/12)

Gas drilling and pipeline work is under way on private land in this section. At this time we think any interruptions in the route will be short term in nature and able to be detoured using the nearest road. Please download the current maps.
